Adam Hayes – Contemporary wrought iron in Granada, Spain

Adam Hayes has been working as an Artist Blacksmith from his workshop in Nigüelas, Granada since 1998. Using traditional forging techniques but with a contemporary twist, he has built up an exiting portfolio of designs for both home and business. Adam’s work includes beautiful iron lights incorporating stained glass, ornamental iron lamps and contemporary wrought iron candelabra. He has also produced a wide range of bespoke wrought iron furniture such as four poster beds or iron tables with tops in glass, oak or ceramics. Adam also undertakes special commissions of architectural ironwork – wrought iron gates, traditional grilles, contemporary railings and wrought iron balustrades. In order to realize his designs Adam uses the methods of the modern artist blacksmith. These include the traditional skills of the blacksmith; heating the iron in the forge, forging it into shape over the anvil and assembling the finished piece using rivets and bands. Recent Work

Adam has produced a wide variety of wrought iron lighting. The wrought iron candelabra shown here was made by drawing out hot square iron bar and then forging it to shape over the anvil. The two halves are then joined together with a square rivet. The finished piece is then coloured by rubbing with wax whilst still hot.

This 18 light wrought iron chandelier measures 2.1m x 2.2m. It was made for a rum distillery and the design had to reflect part of the rum production process. As rum is produced from sugarcane, an important part of the local heritage it was decided to incorporate this into the design. The colour and shape of the glass reflect the feathery flowers of the cane.
